Sepsis is one of the leading causes of death in hospital patients worldwide. It causes more deaths than prostate cancer, breast cancer and HIV/AIDS combined [1]. There are approximately 15,000 episodes of severe sepsis and septic shock in Australian and New Zealand intensive care units per year [2].- CEC
Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that arises when the body's response to infection injures its own tissues and organs [3]. Sepsis can present in any patient, in any clinical setting and is a medical emergency. Despite this, awareness of sepsis and the need for prompt and targeted treatment is limited.World Sepsis Day is an opportunity for Local Health Districts and facilities to celebrate the improvements made in sepsis identification and treatment in emergency departments and to promote the inpatient sepsis program. A range of resources and suggested activities have been developed to promote World Sepsis Day. - CEC
